Dewberry Brews Coffee Co. logo — art nouveau plum lettering with gold filigree around a green teacup holding heart-rosetta latte art

The problem with coffee logos

Coffee branding has two default settings: a minimal sans-serif with a bean, or a circular seal with a mountain in it. Both are fine. Neither tells you anything about what it feels like to be in the room.

Dewberry needed the opposite — a mark with enough ornament to suggest a place worth sitting down in.

Art nouveau, drawn not filtered

The lettering is custom-drawn in a nouveau register: deep plum caps with weighted, organic stems, and oversized decorative D and B initials that anchor each word. Around them, golden filigree unspools into stylised flowers and whiplash curves — the Mucha-descended line that gives the whole mark its movement.

Behind the lettering sits an organic blob field filled with mottled green leaf texture, which does two useful jobs: it holds the composition together as a single silhouette, and it keeps the gold from floating.

Nouveau only works if the ornament grows out of the letterforms. Draped over the top, it just reads as clip art.

The latte is the logo

The focal point is a sage-green cup and saucer holding a heart rosetta, sitting slightly below the optical centre with a spoon angled across the saucer. Everything else — the filigree, the leaf field, the banner — is composed to point at it.

Putting the product at the centre rather than a bean or a mountain is the whole argument of the mark: this is a place that pours something worth photographing.

COFFEE CO. rides a sage banner ribbon off the right side, which keeps the descriptor legible without letting it compete with the lettering.

Construction notes

  • Lettering Custom-drawn, not typeset
  • Palette Deep plum, golden yellow, sage and forest green
  • Focal point Heart-rosetta latte in a green cup
  • Descriptor Sage banner ribbon, right-hand side
  • Format Vector throughout, scalable to signage or a stamp

What I’d keep

The decision to let the composition be asymmetric. A symmetrical nouveau badge would have been easier and deader — the off-centre cup and the banner running off one side are what make it feel drawn rather than assembled.
